The use of liquid ammonia as a fuel for power generation is very limited. This is because it is different from traditional gas turbines. In order to make up for these shortcomings and improve the efficiency of power generation, the three companies do not intend to directly burn liquid ammonia, but re-decompose it into hydrogen and nitrogen through a reformer and burn it, and finally drive a gas turbine. Although there have been precedents for the development of retrofit machines and gas turbines, the integrated power generation technology is the first time in the world.
Compared with the direct gasification and combustion of liquid ammonia, the combustion speed and calorific value of hydrogen and nitrogen during combustion will increase significantly. In addition, the three parties will also design and apply technology to recover part of the heat from the exhaust gas generated in the combustion stage, and then put it into the reformer, thereby increasing the heat of the gas and improving the efficiency of power generation.
Liquid ammonia fuel power generation is one of the ideal environmentally friendly power generation modes because it does not emit carbon dioxide at all. In addition, it is also expected to apply this technology in LNG power generation to contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in infrastructure power plants. Combustion of liquid ammonia and LNG at a standard 20% calorific ratio can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 20% compared with LNG alone for power generation.
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction stated that this agreement provides an opportunity to develop hydrogen turbine technology that uses liquid ammonia as fuel. In the future, we will continue to develop hydrogen turbines and gas turbines, and use a variety of environmentally friendly energy sources such as LNG, hydrogen and liquid ammonia as sources of power generation.
